fifth generation artist based in Fort Worth, Texas

Bethany Joseph is a contemporary realist artist specializing in portraits and still lifes. Through the classical skills of building layers, textures, and depth, she aims to represent the beauty of the mundane and spark joy for the viewer.

Bethany is a proud fifth generation artist who is carrying on her family’s rich artistic legacy. After realizing she was not fulfilling her potential, she quit her job and moved to Edinburgh, Scotland. It was here she was introduced to classical realism and the atelier movement. She found her calling as a portrait artist and began formal training at the Edinburgh Atelier of Fine Art.

After moving back to America, Bethany became a full-time student at The Texas Academy of Figurative Art where she graduated after three and half years. She became profoundly shaped by the work and tenets of the Old Masters. She has been preserving the traditions of techniques passed down through the lineage of the French Academy in a structured classical environment. Bethany is inspired by paintings that evoke a palpable moodiness created through somber color palettes and dramatic light against shadows.

“My work is an examination of the calmness and peace found by using domestic objects and people. From the colors and tonal values, to the light and shadows, my aim is to create a realist painting with a serene meaning. Little tension, harmonious colors, and simple pieces make for a painting that is a visual retreat from the chaos of life. I strive to create timeless pieces through the use of classical techniques passed down from the Old Masters.”
